Ronald Bickerton, Industrial Professor of Mechanical Engineering, organised a field visit to the National Railway Museum, York, in October 2019.
As part of the trip, the group of students from the School of Engineering were given the opportunity to analyse multiple steam-powered engines to see first-hand how the machines are powered without the use of a gearbox.
The visit has run for three years in a row and is a firm favourite with students as they are able to directly learn through the practicality of seeing engines in real life, thus enhancing their studies.
